Personal message from Dan--
I am running for the U. S. Congress because I fear we are in danger of losing our democracy. If we are fearful and timid and wait for someone else to act, the loss of our democracy will surely be the end result. We must not allow democracy to be taken without a fight.
Currently, our unique Democracy is being bought with money - billions from the mega corporations who are creating an oligarchy where the wealthy rule and the rest, powerless, accept what is decided for them. This is economic slavery. We cannot continue to allow corporations to fund our campaigns and then after they have elected their candidates, to write our legislation.
Now is the time for change - change in campaign funding, for the supreme court to review their decision allowing corporations to act as persons. We must limit the power of lobbyists and those who do not even register as lobbyists as they "educate" our elected officials and "help" write legislation. We must do better.
This campaign is about what is happening to our nation and how we can recapture the values that define the dignity and aspirations of the American people. America has been a driving force in the world economy, providing jobs and a middle class living standard that demonstrated to the world the effectiveness of a free people in a representative and open democracy.
Our recent history has become a struggle of the people to recover from the greed of the mega-wealthy few whose disproportionate and corrosive influence in the corridors of government has eroded our savings, our earning power and threatens the fabric of our democracy.
This campaign is about preventing the destruction of the middle class and returning the power to the people. Not everyone agrees on how this task can be accomplished, but we know greed when we see it. We suffer the consequences when the talents, intellects and energies of our people are subverted for the enrichment of the privileged mega-wealthy. This campaign is about returning the American workers to their rightful place of prominence in an economy that has been controlled by those whose interests lie in amassing ever greater wealth and power at the expense of the people.
We have the opportunity and the responsibility to redirect our economy from its reliance on fossil fuels and the burden of the catastrophic debt of politically motivated military misadventures. We must think with a broadened perspective that applies knowledge and skills in new directions. We must focus on quality education for our children. A positive future is possible through the efforts of the people working together to elect public servants who value a better and secure future for everyone.
Today, many of the largest corporations hold record amounts of cash derived from profiteering and bailouts, while simultaneously sheltering themselves from taxation and calling for "increased freedom” to continue conduct not only ruinous to their workers but economically and environmentally unsustainable to our economy and the environment. Public servants must resist the corporate-controlled lobbyists’ influence-peddling. We must fight the reluctance of the multi-national mega-corporations to change their reliance on a “bottom-line” mentality that pays its CEOs exorbitant compensation packages while diminishing its workers through continued layoffs, outsourcing and benefit cuts.
If we ask individuals, small and medium sized companies to act responsibly, then it is only fitting that the wealthy and the mega-corporations also act responsibly. It’s actually very simple: if mega-corporations profit from the people, then it is their obligation to the people to pay their fair tax share, respect honest work and educate our youth for the future.
It is us, the people, who will decide whether we continue to sink into a nation of “haves and have-nots”, depleting our natural resources that are controlled and exploited by a disinterested elite whose primary goal is profit, or if our nation is to be the model of democracy for others to emulate.
I believe in my heart and know with my intellect that every person deserves meaningful participation in the life of our country, where true democracy is the beacon of civilization, where freedom and security is the norm, not the exception.
Please be active, get involved and donate to make Democratic wins possible.
Remember, " We the people," are the wellspring of our Constitution.

of the San Antonio Express News! In their words --"Two Democrats are vying to replace Smith. We recommend that Democratic voters pick Daniel Boone of Comal County. He has a better grasp of the issues facing the nation than his primary foe. "
